o Sunrise - Join us at 7 a.m. for a simplified, in-person, outdoor worship experience in the MRUMC Community Garden as we read the Easter story, reflect, and rejoice in the good news of Jesus’ resurrection dawning as the sun rises on this sacred day. Afterward, you are invited to join us for a church-wide breakfast.

o Easter Pancake Breakfast - Join us at 8 a.m. in the MRUMC Pavilion for pancakes and a delicious breakfast spread provided by congregants for all to enjoy. Bring a dish by 7:45 a.m. or just show up for the fellowship!

o 11 a.m. Worship - We’d love for you to join us at 11 a.m. in the MRUMC Pavilion for music, prayer, an inspiring message, and a joyful celebration of what Jesus' resurrection means for us today! (This service will be live-streamed)

It's Time for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt!

Join us on Saturday, April 4th from 10:00am to 12:00pm for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt! We encourage you to bring the kids, grandkids, great grandkids and even your neighbor’s kids! In addition to all those eggs, we'll have photos with the Easter Bunny, games, crafts, and MORE! We can't wait to see you there!

Out of an abundance of caution, our Leadership Team has decided to cancel this Sunday morning’s (January 25) activities: 9 a.m. Holy Grounds, 10 a.m. Sunday School Hour, and 11 a.m. Worship.

We are not confident that by Sunday morning, conditions will be optimal enough for congregants to travel safely to and from the church campus.

You can look forward to a devotional being sent out on Sunday morning via email and on social media for a time of prayer and reflection.

Everything planned for this Sunday, January 25 will take place next Sunday, February 1.

The Leadership Team decided to make November and December “Giving Thanks” months to help support different charities that need our help. Four charities will be highlighted in November and another four in December.

The display on the table up front will have sticks for each group. Simply pick-a-stick for the group you wish to help.

Community Trunk or Treat & Candy Donations

Sunday October 26th from 4-6pm

at the city park in downtown Oakwood

It’s that time of year where we prepare for the upcoming Trunk or Treat event by asking for your help! We’ll have lots of fun activities planned - more details coming soon, but in the meantime, we’d love for you to bring donated candy (individually wrapped) to the church during regular office hours or on Sunday mornings. Of course, we’ll need your trunk! We’ll be sharing an online sign-up soon so you can grab your spot and decorate a trunk for some community fun! October is designated as Pastor Appreciation month. Help us to let Pastor Tyler know how very much he is appreciated!

A few ideas to show your appreciation: send a handwritten note or card, drop off some homemade treats or a basket of his favorite snacks, provide a meal or gift card, or simply offer your thanks. And of course, remember to pray for him and his family, which is especially important.

Upcoming Fellowship Event!

SAVE THE DATE:

Doing Good Together - "Bucket & Beans” Mission and Fellowship Event

On Sunday, June 29 McEver UMC, Flowery Branch UMC, Oakwood UMC, and Bethlehem UMC are joining together to assemble flood buckets for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) and enjoy a potluck meal afterward! Our goal is to fill 20 buckets together with our congregation responsible for donating the following items towards each bucket:

(20x) One 24 roll of heavy-duty trash bags (33-45-gallon sizes)
Remove from packaging.
(20x) Five N95 particulate respirator dust masks (1-3 mm thickness)
No surgical masks
(20x) Two pairs kitchen gloves
Durable for multiple uses
Remove from packaging.
(20x) One pair work gloves
Cotton with leather palm or all leather

Afterward, we will enjoy a grill out with hotdogs and hamburgers along with sides, desserts, and drinks. Our congregation will bring sides while the other congregations will provide the other items. Please bring flood bucket donations on Sunday mornings or to the front office during the week.

· Palm Sunday - Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter, marking Jesus' joyful entry into Jerusalem. Many gathered to celebrate Jesus as the Messiah, filled with excitement after witnessing his miracles, hearing his teachings, and experiencing God’s presence firsthand. On Palm Sunday, we also celebrate and give thanks for all that God has done and continues to do. Join us at our 11 a.m. worship experience in the MRUMC Pavilion to remember and celebrate the high point of Jesus' ministry together. We look forward to opening worship with having our kiddos process with waving palms and joyful singing! (This service will be live-streamed)

· Holy Thursday - Holy Thursday (also known as Maundy Thursday) commemorates the moment when Jesus gathered with his closest friends for the Last Supper. On this evening, we highlight Jesus' powerful example of humility, love, and serving others, symbolized through washing his disciples’ feet. This simple act reminds us that Jesus came to serve, not to be served. You're invited to join us at 6:30 p.m. in the MRUMC Pavilion for an intimate service featuring thoughtful teaching, reflective moments, music, hand washing, and Communion. (This service will be live-streamed)

· Good Friday - Good Friday is a reflective observance of Jesus’ betrayal, trial, suffering, and ultimately, his death on the cross. This somber day invites us to pause, remember, and deeply reflect on the powerful sacrifice Jesus made out of love for us all. Join us for a joint service with McEver Road UMC, Flowery Branch UMC, Oakwood UMC, and Bethlehem UMC at 12 p.m. hosted at Flowery Branch UMC’s sanctuary (5212 Spring St, Flowery Branch, GA 30542)

· Easter Sunday - Three days after Jesus’ death, something amazing happened—he rose from the grave and walked out of the tomb alive! Jesus' resurrection means a fresh start for all of us. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 19th at 10:00am. We encourage you to bring the kids, grandkids, great grandkids and even your neighbor’s kids! You can help us with this year’s event by donating filled eggs and candy! You can pick up a bag of empty eggs, fill them, and return them; purchase your own prefilled eggs and drop them off; or bring bags of candy to be put in eggs. Donations can be dropped off at the church on Sundays or feel free to drop them in the Bagley House kitchen during regular church office hours. Please have all donations in by no later than Friday, April 18th. Also, we have a yummy addition this year with grill out afterwards with hot dogs and other yummy treats! Help with Easter Pancake Breakfast

We are looking for volunteers and donations of food for our upcoming Easter Pancake Breakfast (post Sunrise Service on April 20th).

Starting this Sunday there will be a signup sheet available for you to bring the following items: breakfast casseroles, fruit salad or trays, pastries, orange juice, or just to help us with the setup and cleanup. The church will provide pancake mix, syrup, and our full coffee cart.

All food needs to arrive ready to eat by no later than 7:45 am that morning. Breakfast will be served from 8:00am to 9:15am in the church pavilion. Cleanup will be completed by 10:15am at the latest so that the church can be ready for the 11:00am Worship service.

Operation Christmas Child

Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child

Join our Children’s Ministry in packing shoeboxes for children in need. We’ll be collecting donations for Operation Christmas Child between now and the morning of Sunday, November 17th.

Items to donate can include small stuffed animals, foam toys, balls, dress-up jewelry, hair ribbons, sunglasses, school supplies (pencils, crayons, markers, notebooks, rulers), coloring books, stickers, and small windup style flashlights.

Note: No candy, gum, toothpaste, war-related toys, foods, liquids, or lotions can be accepted. Also, no glass or aerosol containers.

We’ll also need your empty shoe boxes so now is the time to clean out those closets!

Donations can be dropped off in the box outside the church office during regular office hours or on Sunday mornings.

McEver Road UMC Trunk or Treat 2024

We are looking forward to partnering with area churches and city organizations to offer our annual Trunk or Treat event at the Oakwood Community Center.

The event itself will be be on Sunday, October 27 from 4 PM - 6 PM but we are asking those who are signing up with their decorated trunk to be at Oakwood Community Center an hour early (3 PM) to park and setup.

This is a huge event with a few hundred in attendance so please bring candy to give out (we will have more donated candy on hand to resupply trunks that run out)

Other activities available will include:

Face Painting
Bounce House
Costume Contest w/ gift card prizes (child and adult winners)
Chili Cook-off
Smores making
FREE hotdogs and chips (while supplies last)
Presence of Police and Fire Departments

McEver Road UMC Chili Cook Off 2024

We are excited to invite you to participate in our annual Chili Cook-Off at the Oakwood Community Center. This event will be held on Sunday, October 27, from 4 PM - 6 PM, and we are calling all chili enthusiasts to bring their best recipes for a chance to win the Chili Cook-Off Champion prize!

Participants are asked to arrive an hour early, at 3 PM , to set up and get ready to serve. Each participant will be responsible for serving their own chili to attendees throughout the event.

We will have plenty of sides and toppings to complement your chili. Please bring a generous portion, as we are expecting a few hundred attendees. We will have extra tasting cups and supplies available for everyone.

response to Hurricane Helene.

As we prepare for what may be the most divisive election in our lifetime, our next sermon series reminds us and others to follow the “Golden Rule” from Matthew 7:12 (NIV), “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you…” In addition to our teachings on Sunday mornings, we’ll be sharing a daily devotion throughout the month of October leading up to Election Day. Plus, we’ll be having custom made yard signs that help us encourage everyone to “Do Unto Others.” Each yard sign will cost $30 and will be available for purchase and pickup starting the first Sunday in October.

THE SHIP - Pizza Movie Night!

Thursday, August 22 at 6:00pm at McEver Road Church Pavilion

We’re planning to use the newly completed earthen oven in our community garden to make personal pizza for both kids and adults! We’ll have a simplified “pizza bar” where everyone can top their own pizza before baking it in the oven. While the pizzas are baking, we’ll head back to the pavilion for fellowship and watch Despicable Me 4! Bring your overalls and a yellow shirt to dress up as a minion!

As a reminder, we like to have our gatherings end promptly at 7:30 p.m., especially now that school is back. That being said, know that this evening might run later with the movie. Of course, you are free to come and go as you please!

Back to School Support!

We’re gearing up to support our local elementary, middle, and high schools for students as families prepare for the start of the school year. So far, lots of supplies have already been donated from local businesses so here are some other ways we can help:

Oakwood Elementary Back to School Bash - Wednesday, July 24 from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Oakwood Elementary School - Oakwood Elementary is hosting a back to school event and has invited us to help serve and share more about our church. If you’d like to sign up to host our church booth and/or serve to setup, work the event, and clean-up, then please email Pastor Tyler at tyler@mceverumc.org

West Hall Middle School Backpack Donations - WHMS is interested in our church providing backpacks for new students who need one or for student’s who can’t afford one. This is an easy way to show these students and their families that we care. Bring your backpacks to church on Sunday or drop them by the church office during the week.

West Hall High School - We are still waiting to hear back from counselors at WHHS, so stayed tuned for possible opportunities and details!

Y’all out sauced yourselves! Over 40 jars of spaghetti sauce were donated in April! Thank you for your generosity and a special thank you to the Journey to Bethlehem Sunday School Class for their thoughtful monetary donation which allowed Debbie Phillips and Nancie Daugherty to purchase even more!

Each month the South Hall Community Food Pantry will request specific items in addition to your regular donations. For the month of May the request is for 15oz cans of fruit along with clean, empty 12 count egg cartons . You can place these items in the black & yellow donation boxes on Bagley Porch or on the kitchen table.

The next opportunities to serve at the SHCFP are Monday, May 13 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and Saturday, May 18, from 10:00am to 12:00pm. We are always looking for eager new servers to help feed our neighbors in need. We are entering a very compressed time period for the next few months. The expression “all-hands-on-deck” comes to mind. The church is fortunate to have so many willing and talented people in our various ministries. If you have felt left out and want to be “Somebody,” your church needs you! Below are listed the various tasks that we hope to work on in the next few months.

Opportunities to Serve:

Framing the lower-level walls to continue finishing the new youth and children’s area
Install 6X6 post to support the canopy for the church homecoming
Wash and clean the mega tarp to be used for the homecoming gathering canopy
Continued maintenance in the Community Garden
Touch up weeding in the natural areas around the worship pavilion
Continued work on the Heritage oven in the garden
Planting the new crop of corn after Mother’s Day
Freshen up our trail signs with a coat of stain to match the church signs
Plant a sunflower garden on the hill in the area of the three crosses
Any project that you have noticed that needs a little attention

We have the tools to equip you and will provide directions for the various tasks. You’ll never be asked to work beyond your comfort level. This is an all-volunteer army with no pressure to keep coming every week.

Safe Sanctuaries Training

Sunday, May 5th after the 11:00 service McEver Rd Church will be conducting a Safe Sanctuaries training.

This training was created for the purpose of providing safe spaces for all people to participate in Christian community. It is for those working with Children, youth and vulnerable adults, whether inside the church buildings or out in our communities. Safe Sanctuaries is the standard to which each congregation pledges to care for those with whom they are in ministry and those who offer themselves as leaders of these programs. Safe Sanctuaries is a requirement and a faithful commitment to our biblical and United Methodist standards.

Holy Week 2024

Holy Week is the observance of the events that led Jesus on the journey to Resurrection for the whole world. Over the course of a week, Jesus experiences betrayal, a trial, suffering, and death. But three days later, Sunday comes and Jesus walks out of the tomb changing everything! Our story of brokenness changes into a story of redemption through Jesus. Easter is about Jesus giving you and me a brand new start—a new beginning! And it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’ve been, its God’s gift to you.

Palm Sunday - March 24, 2024

Palm Sunday is the Sunday prior to Easter Sunday, which observes Jesus’ “triumphal” entry into Jerusalem. Many people are gathered to celebrate Jesus as the Messiah (Savior ) because they have witnessed his miracles, heard his teachings, and experienced God in their midst. On this Sunday, we, too, give thanks and rejoice for all that God has done and is doing! Join us at out our 11 a.m. worship experience as we remember the culmination of Jesus’ ministry and celebrate together! (This service will be live-streamed)

Holy Thursday - March 28, 2024

Holy Thursday (sometimes called Maundy Thursday) observes Jesus with his disciples around the table of the Last Supper. We emphasize Jesus modeling humility, sacrifice, and servitude through his act of foot washing amongst his disciples. We learn and remember that Jesus came to serve and not to be served. Join us at 6:30 p.m. for a simple, in-person service with a teaching, reflection time, singing, hand washing, and Communion. (This service will be live-streamed)

Good Friday - March 29, 2024

Good Friday is the observance of Jesus’ betrayal and trial, which culminates with his suffering and death on the cross. As you can imagine, this observance is a somber one. It’s during this time that we are meant to reflect and remember Jesus’ sacrifice for us all.

Download our reflection guide online, where you will find readings, prompts, meditations, and prayer. You’re welcome to use this guide as part of your devotion at any point throughout the day.

EASTER - March 31, 2024

Following Jesus’ death, three days later, he rises and walks out of the tomb alive! Jesus’ resurrection signals to us a new beginning! It’s that time of year, y’all…Trunk-R-Treat! The event will be on Sunday, October 29th from 4-6pm at the city park in Downtown Oakwood. All are invited to come and decorate a trunk for some community fun. We will also be having a chili cook-off, costume contest, s’mores station, bouncy house, local first responders, and more! If you are able to make candy donations, please bring them by during regular office hours or on Sunday. We will also be needing folks to help with traffic, roast some s’mores, cooking chili, face painting, and watching the kiddos in the bounce house. The music program at WHHS has added two new, exciting classes for students. Many of the enrolled students would never have the opportunity for music lessons and are so grateful to have been given the opportunity to take beginner lessons for piano and guitar. With the increase of enrollment, more instruments are needed! After speaking with Mr. Esley, Music Teacher, and Ms. McNeilly, School Counselor, we are partnering to donate used electric pianos (4 needed), acoustic guitars (5 needed), as well as stereo headphones (10 needed). Don’t have any instruments or headphones laying around? No problem! You can donate financially to the church (write “music instruments” in the memo field), which we will then use toward purchasing these instruments and headphones.

Home Communion Ministry

Our first Prayer Initiative date is Saturday, August 19, at the Prescott subdivision across from West Hall High School. We will meet at 10 am and distribute the prayer door hangers. Special Offering for Vulnerable Kids

There will be a special offering on Sunday, July 16 for Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center. This ministry of the UMC North GA Conference provides a safe and nurturing environment where severely abused and neglected children and teenagers can thrive and heal from trauma. Murphy-Harpst provides:

· Residential treatment for adolescents and teens

· Transitional living for older teens and young adults

· Specialized foster care for children of all ages

· Recreational therapy such as equine therapy, sports clubs and more

· Community services including family therapy, life skills, and substance abuse counseling

JOHN WRIGHT:

Since this was my first in person conference, I did not know what to expect.

I was impressed by how well run the event was. The sessions began and ended remarkably on time, even with some extensive discussions on some of the resolutions.
I enjoyed the music. It was a joy to sing with 1500 + Methodists. Very moving.
Even with the disaffiliation issues, UMC is healthy, with people trying to follow the words of Jesus, and the example of John Wesley, in the spirit of "everyone is welcome at our table".
All in all, I am proud to be a Methodist from McEver.

BEN BUCHAN:

Here’s some of my personal takes on the conference:

It was great to see multiple photos from our church included in the BEAT (Barnes Evaluation and Administration Team) highlight video.
The service of remembrance was excellent.
The music was excellent.
We saw quite a few faces familiar to McEver Road UMC. (Rob Bruce, Todd & Amy Dudich, Kory Trinrud, Doug Thrasher, etc.)
I enjoyed the celebration of retirees. Doug Thrasher was the pastor at McEver when Jackie and I started attending in 1985 and baptized Daniel and Katie. Also, we met and shared the table with one of the retirees, Chuck Beattie, during lunch. Could listen to him talk for hours.
I was not very “proud” of any of the process or proceedings dealing with resolutions.

REV. TYLER JACKSON:

This Annual Conference was unique in that there was a lot of newness from McEver Road UMC with both Ben and John serving as delegates for the first time as well as for Pastor Chris attending the Conference in full. It was new for me, too, as I came to represent McEver Road as the Lead Pastor. That being said, I enjoyed getting to introduce Chris to other pastors and laity in the connection in a host of different ways. It was through those conversations where we often got to hear some of the challenges colleagues and churches are facing but, ultimately, the persistent hope, faith, and love that pastors and congregations are still showing their communities. It was a joy to be able to share all the good that God is up to at McEver Road as well. Thank you to Ben, John, Pastor Chris, Pastor Karen, and to all of you for your ongoing faithfulness.

Exciting News for Dinner Church

McEver Road Church has been presented with an opportunity to serve and be a part of our community through Family Promise. One week out of every 3 months we will prepare, serve, and eat a meal with our resident neighbors at Family Promise. It will be the Monday, Wednesday, and Friday dinner of the week we participate.

Special Easter Offering

Sunday, April 16 is the last day to contribute to the special offering on behalf of high school seniors who owe fees. So far we have raised a little over $1000 of the $5,900 balance. Here’s the story:

There are students who accrue charges (i.e. lunch dues) over the course of their academic lives (elementary through high school), which if unpaid by the end of the year as senior high school students, they are unable to receive their diplomas.

These students have worked hard academically, are expected to graduate, and yet are unable to do so often due to circumstances beyond their control or ability. In communication with both Amy McNeilly and Luara Indorf, counselors at West Hall High School, they have said that there is a current balance of $5,900. They said that any amount that we are able to give can be used to offset these charges. Whatever we are able to give would be applied to the students with the greatest need and who are on track to graduate this May.

We ask that you prayerfully consider giving to this need as a beautiful, tangible way to celebrate the “freedom” that God gives us in the spirit of Easter.

Mindful Monastic Meal

A Message from Pastor Chris

I need your help with a seminary class project. I am inviting you to participate in a modern-day version of a practice done by early Christian monks. It’s pretty easy. Just one night a week I would like you to commit to eating only vegetables and bread (prepared however you like), and drinking only water or wine. Directly following the meal, you will spend at least 15 minutes in any combination of prayer, meditation, silent reflection, or hymn singing. This is all to be done in your own home; no group meetings. Depending on the participants' communication abilities, I will create a discussion forum of some sort, where you can share your experiences, thoughts, and even some vegetable recipes!

Holy Week

Holy Week is the observance of the events that led Jesus on the journey to Resurrection for the whole world. Over the course of a week, Jesus experiences betrayal, a trial, suffering, and death. But, then, Sunday comes and Jesus walks out of the tomb, which changes everything! Our story of brokenness changes into a story of redemption through Jesus. Easter is about Jesus giving you and me a brand new start - a new beginning! And it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’ve been, it’s God’s gift for you.

Passion Sunday is the Sunday prior to Easter Sunday. This year, we spend more time remembering Jesus with his disciples during the Last Supper, emphasizing the meal Jesus shares with them, which symbolizes his sacrifice. We remember that Jesus’ sacrifice becomes our healing and redemption.

Join us at our 11 a.m. worship experience where we remember Jesus’ sacrifice and share in the same simple, sacred meal that Jesus shared with his disciples that night through Communion

Through Maundy Thursday, we continue to "sit” with Jesus and his disciples around the table of the Last Supper. This year, we emphasize Jesus modeling humility, sacrifice, and servitude through the act of bodily washing. We remember that Jesus came to serve and not be served.

We’re really excited about moving forward with plans for our dedicated kids’ and youth ministry space in the basement! To get started, we’re having a Moving Extravaganza on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 9:30 a.m.

Here’s what we intend to do:

*Move lots of stuff from the annex basement to the parsonage basement. This will enable our ROMEOs to install drywall and finish the space.

*Move tools and construction/maintenance/garden items from the upper garage to the basement garage. This will be a more convenient storage location for these items, and free up the upper garage for its use as a classroom.

Please come help if you can, and bring your pick-up truck, SUV, and hand trucks if you have them available. Join us for breakfast with the ROMEOs at 8 a.m. at Curt’s (optional), and then we’ll head over to the church and start to work by 9:30.

The Thursday morning Bible study is back, beginning Thursday, Feb. 16th @ 10:30. We will study 70 Hebrew Words Every Christian Should Know. It is available on Amazon as a paperback or electronic. The link is attached below. Everyone is welcome. This study will be facilitated by Janni Martin. It will be conducted via Zoom to include those who live further or aren't comfortable driving to the church. Someone Special Dance

Come dance with us as we host our first Someone Special dance! Ages 0-12 and their adult escort (parent, grandparent, etc.) are welcome to attend (children will not be permitted without an adult.) Prayer Walk Wednesday has a new time! We’ll continue to gather on Wednesday mornings but we will meet mid-morning at 10 a.m. throughout the winter season. In the colder weather, we get our bodies moving as we hit the trail for fellowship, exercise, and to enjoy the beauty of nature. We then wrap up with a time of sharing and prayer.

No RSVP needed! Just come ready to hang out and fellowship, pray & reflect, and walk or run! All church and community members are welcome to participate! Invite a friend or neighbor!

We have recently had the privilege of learning more about the great work of Hispanic Alliance ranging from family wellbeing and stability, economic empowerment, advocacy, civil engagement, to immigration and legal services. Vanessa was a great host and an even greater inspiration as the founder and director of Hispanic Alliance continuing to make a difference in our communities.

We asked Vanessa ‘How can our church help?’ She told us with winter coming, children are needing coats! So between now & Nov. 27, look through your closets & clean out those coats you no longer wear or need! THEY ONLY NEED CHILDREN’S SIZES!!! So ask your relatives, friends & neighbors to help by cleaning out their closets & donating gently used coats to the Hispanic Alliance for distribution to children in need. Place all donations in the COAT Donation Box in the Annex by Nov. 27.
