Welcome to McEver Road Church

Welcome!

We are truly glad you’re here! We extend a heart-filled welcome to those who feel as though they have everything and those who feel they have absolutely nothing; those who have beach houses, lake houses, or mountain houses and those who are experiencing homelessness.

We welcome those who have healthy family relationships and those who are the “odd-one-out” in their family; those who are orphaned, single, married, separated, widowed, or divorced; those who have a mom and a dad or those who have two mom’s or two dad’s.

We welcome children of all ages and those who are young at heart. We welcome those who are over 60 but have not grown up yet and teenagers, who are growing up too fast. We welcome soccer moms, NASCAR dads, gamers, starving artists, latte-sippers, vegetarians, and junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are inked, pierced, or both.

We welcome those who are in recovery, still addicted, or just got out of jail. We welcome you if you’re having problems or if you don’t like “organized religion” - we’ve been there, too.

We welcome you if you’re “just browsing" or haven’t been in church in a long time.

We welcome those who work too hard or can’t find work; those who have PhD’s and those with no special letters before or after their name. We welcome those who look different or speak a different language; we’re learning to see the image of God in everyone.

We offer a special welcome to those who are aching and hurting and could use a prayer right now; those who had religion shoved down their throat as a kid or those who are simply “seekers” and those who are doubters.

The good news is that God meets us where we are and we are so glad to meet you where you are today and welcome you into the family of McEver Road United Methodist Church!

What is our goal?

Through the faith communities of McEver Road Church, we seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Being a disciple of Jesus means being a student - or learner - and a practitioner - or doer - of the things that Jesus calls us to do and become.

We believe transformation of the world happens one person at a time. Transformation is realized as we expereince healing and redemption that comes through both a personal relationship with Jesus and in relationship with others on the journey of following and living out the way of Jesus.

We believe this happens not only on Sunday mornings but in everyday life with everyday people.

What does transformation look like?

Transformation comes through relationship with God and each other. Therefore, we believe our vision is to cultivate communities where everyone is

LOVING CHRIST.

LOVING PEOPLE.

HELPING PEOPLE LOVE CHRIST.

It's through these relationships where our faith takes shape and begins to influence our lives and helps us make a difference, together.

Our vision isn't contained to one hour, one space, or with one group, but is flexible and adaptable to meet people where they are throughout our communities and follow God with the rest.

Our Fruitful Practices

The following fruitful practices are what help guide and shape us to embody our vision and fulfill our mission as followers of Jesus.
All of these fruitful practices are gateways to our lives being transformed.

1

Radical Hospitality

The desire to invite, welcome, and affirm all into the fellowship of Christ's Church no matter their gender, race, income, sexual orientation, marital status, ability, or age.

2

Passionate Worship

Worship in all forms opens our hearts to Jesus Christ’s love, grace, forgiveness, and freedom. Personal and corporate worship are vital to encountering God's presence and power.

3

Intentional Faith Development

Learning and living out the Gospel of Jesus invites us to go deeper in our relationship with God and with each other. Developing spiritual practices and ways to apply our faith daily helps us align with God's heart and will as well as make them a reality.

4

Risk-taking Mission & Service

Living out the love of Jesus is both practical and sacrificial. This posture invites us to consistently put our neighbors above ourselves. It moves us from a perspective of "me" toward a perspective of "we."

5

Extravagant Generosity

Generosity, not consumption, is critical to meaningful living. Generosity invites us to appreciate what we have been given vs. what we think we deserve or what we do not have. Generosity is woven throughout the character of God and we seek to reflect that same character.

Our Congregation's History and Hopes

Below is a brief history of our congregation's existence as well as some of our hopes for the future of our ministry.

Past

In the late 1960s two small churches, West Gainesville United Methodist and St. Phillip United Methodist Church (formerly called Gainesville Mill Methodist Church) were located in declining neighborhoods. Membership in both churches had declined to the point that they might close. Instead, the two churches decided to merge their congregations into a new location.

At first, the combined congregation met in Cinemas West, a theater just off Brown’s Bridge Road. Using proceeds from the sale of the two buildings, property was purchased on McEver Road and a church was built.

Additions to the church building and campus continued into the 1990's and 2000's until, eventually, the congregation outgrew that campus. In 2019, the church sold that property (now Family Promise of Hall County) and purchased new property at 5226 McEver Road.

Present

Since 2019, our congregation has been developing our new church campus to primarily serve the community more than it serves ourselves.

Our progress so far includes:

  • Renovating the upper-level of the existing house (known as the "Bagley House") on the property for classrooms, office space, and meeting areas for use on Sunday morning and during the week.
  • Building a multi-use pavilion that seats approximately 100 people, includes restrooms, and flexible audio/visual equipment. It is also furnished with large BTU heaters as well as oscillating fans for added comfort throughout the year.
  • Developing walking and fitness trails on our campus with guided, simple exercises throughout
  • Establishing pockets of areas with fire pits and modest camp grounds
  • Launching our 1-acre community garden with adaptable gazebo, which will be wheelchair accessible.

Future

In 2024, we hope to accomplish the following:

  • Finish renovating the lower level of the Bagley House for additional multi-use space, primarily for children and youth.
  • Install playground(s) for children of all ages.
  • and more!

In addition, not only will we continue to develop our campus to meet the needs of the community but we also hope to develop a "network" of micro-churches throughout Oakwood and the surrounding areas to develop Christian community where everyone already gathers, works, and plays.
